Helmut Walser Smith

Helmut Walser Smith (born 1962) is a German historian. He was an associate professor of modern history at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. In 2002, he received the Fraenkel Prize in Contemporary History. His publications include “German Nationalism and Religious Conflict: Culture, Ideology, Politics, 1870–1914” (1995), “Protestants, Catholics and Jews in Germany, 1800–1914” (editor, 2001), “Exclusionary Violence: Antisemitic Riots in Modern German History” (co-editor, 2002), and “The Holocaust and Other Genocides” (editor, 2002). He also wrote “Die Geschichte des Schlachters. Mord und Antisemitismus in einer deutschen Kleinstadt” and “Fluchtpunkt 1941. Kontinuitäten der deutschen Geschichte”.
