Helmut Dietl (1944–2015) was a German film and television director and screenwriter. Born in Bad Wiessee, he began his career as a production manager and assistant director at the Münchner Kammerspiele. He became known particularly for television series such as “Münchner Geschichten” (1974), “Der ganz normale Wahnsinn” (1979), “Monaco Franze” (1983), and “Kir Royal” (1986). His feature films included “Schtonk!” (1992), “Rossini” (1997), and “Late Show” (1999). He received an Academy Award nomination for “Schtonk!” in 1992.
