Helen Keller

Helen Keller (1880–1968) was an American writer, lecturer, and activist. She lost her hearing and sight as a young child as a result of an illness. From 1887, she was taught by Anne Sullivan and learned to read, write, and speak. After completing her schooling, Keller studied language and literature and earned a university degree. She published several books, including her widely read autobiography, *The Story of My Life*, and undertook extensive lecture tours. Through her work, she advocated in particular for the interests of blind people, as well as for women’s rights and minorities.
