Heinrich Hoffmann (1809–1894) was a German physician and author. After studying medicine, he worked as a general practitioner in Frankfurt am Main and became director of the city’s institution for the mentally ill and people with epilepsy in 1851. He is best known for the children’s book *Der Struwwelpeter* (*Shockheaded Peter*), which he wrote and illustrated in 1844 as a gift for his three-year-old son, Carl. Hoffmann also wrote poetry, plays, and other children’s books.
