Heinrich August Winkler

Heinrich August Winkler (born 1938 in Königsberg) is a German historian. He studied history, philosophy and public law in Tübingen, Münster and Heidelberg, and completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin in 1970. He taught there and subsequently held a professorship at the University of Freiburg from 1972 to 1991. From 1991 until his retirement, he was Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Humboldt University of Berlin. His major works include “Germany: The Long Road West,” “The History of the West” and “Weimar 1918–1933.” Winkler received the European Prize for Political Culture in 2014, the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding in 2016 and the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2018.
