Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki (born 1941 in Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese director, animator and manga artist. After studying economics at Gakushuin University, he began his career as an animator at Toei Animation in 1963. In 1978, he directed the television series “Future Boy Conan”; his first feature film, “The Castle of Cagliostro,” followed in 1979. From 1983 to 1994, he published the manga “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.” In 1985, he co-founded Studio Ghibli with Isao Takahata. His best-known films include “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,” “Princess Mononoke,” “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle.” He received an Oscar in 2003 for “Spirited Away” and an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in 2014.
