Hartmut Lehmann (born 1936) is a German historian of modern history. He was a professor of modern history at Kiel University, founding director of the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C. (1987–1993), and director of the Max Planck Institute for History in Göttingen from 1993 to 2004. Lehmann was elected to the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and appointed a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He also received honorary doctorates from the universities of Basel, Helsinki, and Lund. His publications include Luthergedächtnis 1817 bis 2017 and Das Reformationsjubiläum 2017.
