Hartmann von Aue (born around 1160; probably died between 1210 and 1220) was a Middle High German poet and one of the major epic writers of the Middle High German classical period. He probably lived in the Duchy of Swabia and had a scholar’s education. His surviving works include the verse romances “Erec” and “Iwein,” as well as love songs, crusade songs, an allegorical lament, verse narratives, and legends.
