Harry Crews

Harry Crews (1935–2012) was an American writer. He grew up in impoverished circumstances in the US state of Georgia and became known in 1968 with his debut novel, “The Gospel Singer.” His often autobiographical fiction combined Southern Gothic with biting satire and existential themes. Crews also taught creative writing. In 1991, he had a supporting role in Sean Penn’s film “The Indian Runner,” and in 2003 he appeared as himself in the documentary “Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus.”
