Harold Brodkey

Harold Brodkey (1930–1996) was an American writer. From the 1950s onward, he published short stories in magazines including The New Yorker and Esquire, and he occasionally taught literature and creative writing at Cornell University and City College of the City University of New York. His major works include the short-story collection First Love and Other Stories (1954), the novels The Runaway Soul (1991) and Profane Friendship (1994), and the posthumously published diary volume This Wild Darkness: The Story of My Death (1996). Brodkey received, among other honors, the Prix de Rome from the American Academy (1959) and three O. Henry Awards (1975, 1976, and 1978).
