Harald Parigger was born in Flensburg in 1953. He studied history and German literature in Würzburg and earned a doctorate in history. He subsequently worked as a secondary-school teacher and seminar leader, and at the House of Bavarian History in Munich. He headed the Grafing secondary school for thirteen years and directed the Bavarian State Centre for Civic Education in Munich from 2013 to 2019. Parigger began working as a freelance author in 1994. He wrote poetry, plays and stories for children, as well as historical novels and crime fiction for young and adult readers; several of his works received awards. His particular interest was the social and everyday history of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. His historical novel The Black Monk combines documented historical events with fictional details.
