Hans-Dietrich Genscher (1927–2016) was a German politician of the Free Democratic Party (FDP). He served as Federal Minister of the Interior from 1969 to 1974 and then, almost continuously until 1992, as Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs and Vice Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was chairman of the FDP from 1974 to 1985 and became its honorary chairman in 1992. Genscher played a significant role in shaping German foreign policy, German reunification and the development of a united Europe.
