Hans Blumenberg (1920–1996) was a German philosopher. He studied philosophy, German studies and classical philology, received his doctorate in Kiel in 1947 and completed his habilitation there in 1950. After professorships in Hamburg, Gießen and Bochum, he taught at the University of Münster from 1970 until his retirement in 1985. His main fields included metaphorology, theories of myth and the history of philosophy. Among his best-known works are “Paradigms for a Metaphorology,” “Work on Myth,” “Shipwreck with Spectator” and “The Readability of the World.” His honors included the 1974 Kuno Fischer Prize and the 1980 Sigmund Freud Prize for Scholarly Prose.
