Hans Bankl (1940–2004) was an Austrian pathologist, university professor of pathological anatomy, and forensic expert. He completed his habilitation in 1972, becoming the youngest lecturer in Austria at the time. From 1977, he headed the pathology institute of a large hospital. Alongside his scientific publications, Bankl wrote numerous popular books, including *Der Pathologe weiß alles*, *Im Rücken steckt das Messer*, and *Kolumbus brachte nicht nur die Tomaten*. He also taught anatomy for artists at the Vienna art academy. Bankl collected documents from medical history and studied the causes of death of historical figures.
