H. G. Wells (Herbert George Wells, 1866–1946) was an English writer. After studying natural sciences, he increasingly devoted himself to writing. He achieved worldwide fame with novels such as *The Time Machine* and *The War of the Worlds*, and played a decisive role in shaping the development of science fiction. As a social satirist and utopian writer, he combined scientifically informed adventure stories with explorations of social issues. His subjects included time travel, invisibility and the invasion of Earth by beings from outer space. Wells died in London in 1946.
