Gwendolyn Brooks

Gwendolyn Brooks (1917–2000) was an American writer and one of the most significant poets in the United States. Shortly after her birth, she moved with her parents to Chicago, a city with which she remained closely associated in her literary work. In 1950, she became the first Black author to receive the Pulitzer Prize, for her poetry collection “Annie Allen.” In 1976, she became the first Black author inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her 1953 novel “Maud Martha” was her only novel.
