Gustav Schwab

Gustav Schwab (1792–1850) was a German writer, pastor, and secondary-school professor. He studied philology, philosophy, and theology in Tübingen and worked as an editor, first for F. A. Brockhaus and later at Johann Friedrich Cotta’s publishing house. Alongside his work as a clergyman and teacher, he devoted himself to making classical subjects accessible to a wider audience. His Sagen des klassischen Altertums, published in three volumes from 1838 to 1840, retold Greek and Roman myths and epics and became a lasting work of German children’s and young adult literature. In 1847, the University of Tübingen awarded him an honorary doctorate in theology.
