Gustav Meyrink, whose real name was Gustav Meyer, was born in Vienna in 1868 and died in Starnberg in 1932. The Austrian writer, dramatist, and translator worked as a banker in Prague from 1889 to 1902 before turning to literature. He became known chiefly for his fantastic novels, including The Golem, The Green Face, Walpurgis Night, and The White Dominican. He also translated works from English into German.
