Gunnar Staalesen (born 1947 in Bergen, Norway) is a Norwegian writer best known for his crime novels. He studied English, French and literary studies and worked as a theatre dramaturge until 1987. He published his first novel in 1969. He is particularly known for the series featuring private detective Varg Veum, which has been translated into numerous languages and partly adapted for film and television. Staalesen has also written plays and children’s books, as well as a widely noted trilogy about the history of Bergen. He has received several awards for his literary work.
