Grit Poppe was born in Boltenhagen in 1964 and studied at the Institute of Literature in Leipzig. From 1989 to 1992, she was involved in the civic movement Demokratie Jetzt and served as its regional director for Brandenburg. She has published books for children, young adults and adults, as well as nonfiction. Her young adult novel Weggesperrt received several awards, including the Gustav Heinemann Peace Prize for Children’s and Young People’s Books. Verraten received the Franco-German Prize for Young Adult Literature. Together with Niklas Poppe, she published Die Weggesperrten: Umerziehung in der DDR – Schicksale von Kindern und Jugendlichen.
