Giuseppe Ungaretti

Giuseppe Ungaretti (1888–1970) was an Italian poet, journalist, and literary scholar. Born in Alexandria, he studied in Paris, where he was associated with the circle around Guillaume Apollinaire. Ungaretti is regarded as one of the most important representatives of Italian Hermeticism (Ermetismo). His poems were translated into German by, among others, Ingeborg Bachmann, Hilde Domin, and Paul Celan. He died in Milan.
