Ghassan Kanafani

Ghassan Kanafani (1936–1972) was a Palestinian writer, journalist, and political activist. Born in Acre, he lived as a refugee in Lebanon and later in Damascus after his family was displaced in 1948. He completed his schooling in Damascus and worked for a time as a teacher. In 1956 he went to Kuwait, where he taught physical education and art. From 1960 onward, he worked for several newspapers in Beirut and became a spokesperson for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, founded by George Habash. Kanafani was killed in Beirut in 1972 by a bomb attached to his car. His literary work is closely connected with Palestinian history and his political commitment.
