Gertrude Stein (1874–1946) was an American writer, publisher, and art collector. She was born in Allegheny, now part of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died in Paris. From 1903, she lived in Paris, where she established a literary salon at 27 Rue de Fleurus with her brother, Leo Stein. The salon became an important meeting place for the artistic avant-garde. Stein later ran it with her partner, Alice B. Toklas. She became widely known for The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and later increasingly pursued experimental forms of writing.
