Gerald Durrell

Gerald Durrell (1925–1995) was born in Jamshedpur, India, and moved with his family to the Greek island of Corfu as a child. There he developed a strong interest in wildlife. He later led international expeditions to study rare species and became involved in wildlife conservation. In 1959, he founded a zoo on Jersey dedicated to protecting endangered animals. Durrell wrote more than 30 books on animals and zoology and received several awards for his work. He died on Jersey in 1995.
