Gerald Clarke, born in San Francisco in 1938, studied literature and languages. As a journalist, he wrote for publications including Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Esquire, and profiled figures such as Marlene Dietrich, Laurence Olivier, Alfred Hitchcock, Wim Wenders, Allen Ginsberg, and Vladimir Nabokov. In 2004, he published Truman Capote’s collected letters.
