George Sand

George Sand (1804–1876), born Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin de Francueil and known after her marriage as Baroness Dudevant, was a French novelist, playwright, journalist, and literary critic. Born in Paris, she died in Nohant. Writing under a male pseudonym, she published more than 70 novels as well as numerous stories, plays, and political texts. Through her work and unconventional way of life, she advocated women’s rights and criticized social restrictions. She was also known for wearing men’s clothing in public.
