George R. Stewart

George R. Stewart (1895–1980) was an American writer and literary scholar. Born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, he studied at several universities, including Princeton University and Columbia University, and taught English literature for many years at the University of California, Berkeley. He published novels as well as nonfiction, addressing ecological themes before the rise of the environmental movement. His best-known novel, Earth Abides, was awarded the International Fantasy Award in 1951 and inspired Stephen King’s The Stand.
