George Gordon Lord Byron (1788–1824) was an English poet and a major figure of English Romanticism. He wrote poetry, verse epics and narratives, satirical works and plays, as well as diaries and numerous letters. In 1816, he left England permanently and subsequently lived in Mediterranean countries. He also became known for taking part in the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire. Byron died in Missolonghi in 1824, probably of malaria.
