Gavin Maxwell (1914–1969) was a Scottish writer, naturalist and conservationist. Before devoting himself to literature, he worked as a trainer for British intelligence and, among other pursuits, took part in shark hunting. His best-known work, Ring of Bright Water (1960), became an international bestseller. In it, Maxwell described his life with otters that he raised. He died in Inverness in 1969.
