Gaston Leroux (1868–1927) was a French writer and journalist. After studying law in Paris, he worked as a lawyer until 1893 and then became a court reporter for newspapers including L’Écho de Paris and Le Matin. From 1901, he worked as a foreign correspondent and reporter, travelling in Europe, Africa and Asia. His journalism included coverage of trials and political events, including in Russia. Leroux published the detective novel *The Mystery of the Yellow Room* in 1907, now regarded as a genre classic. He is best known internationally for *The Phantom of the Opera* (1910).
