Gary Phillips worked as a community activist and union organizer and previously delivered dog cages. He published novels, comics, and short stories and edited several anthologies, including »Orange County Noir« and the award-winning collection »The Obama Inheritance: Fifteen Stories of Conspiracy Theory«. His crime novel »Violent Spring«, first published in 1994, was named one of Los Angeles’s most important crime novels in 2020. Phillips also served as senior story editor on the series »Snowfall«, which focuses on crack cocaine and the CIA in South Central Los Angeles during the 1980s—the area where he grew up.
