Galsan Tschinag, born in 1943 as the youngest son of a nomadic family in western Mongolia, was a Mongolian writer and tribal leader of the Turkic-speaking Tuvan people. From 1962 to 1968, he studied German philology in Leipzig and subsequently wrote many of his literary works in German. He taught German language and literature at the University of Ulaanbaatar and later worked as an editor and chief editor at Mongol Kino. His stories were translated into numerous languages. He received several honors for his work, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
