Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844–1900) was a German classical philologist, philosopher, and writer. He was born on October 15, 1844, in Röcken near Lützen, and died on August 25, 1900, in Weimar. Nietzsche studied Protestant theology and classical philology in Bonn and Leipzig. In 1869, before completing his doctorate, he was appointed extraordinary professor at the University of Basel; he left the position in 1879 for health reasons and subsequently worked as an independent philosopher. His best-known works include *The Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Music*, *Thus Spoke Zarathustra*, and *Beyond Good and Evil*. He also wrote poetry and composed music.
