Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling
Author · 2 books
Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling (1775–1854) was a German philosopher of German Idealism. He studied at the Tübinger Stift, alongside Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Hölderlin. In 1798 he began teaching at the University of Jena, where he was connected with representatives of Early Romanticism and Johann Gottlieb Fichte. He later taught in Munich and, from 1842 to 1846, in Berlin. His major works include the »System of Transcendental Idealism« (1800) and »Philosophical Investigations into the Essence of Human Freedom« (1809). Schelling’s thought developed from natural philosophy and the philosophy of identity toward a so-called positive philosophy, which also addressed revelation and mythology.
