Friedrich Gundolf

Friedrich Gundolf (1880–1931), originally named Gundelfinger, was a German literary scholar, poet, translator, and editor. From 1911 he taught at Heidelberg University, where he became a professor of modern German literature in 1916. His best-known works include Shakespeare und der deutsche Geist (1911) and Goethe (1916). His literary work and scholarship were strongly influenced by Stefan George for many years; Gundolf remained devoted to George even after their relationship ended in the early 1920s.
