Fredy Gareis was born in Kazakhstan in 1975 and grew up in Rüsselsheim, Germany. After finishing school, he worked as a taxi driver, cleaner and drug tester, among other jobs, to finance his travels. He subsequently worked as a journalist for publications including Die Zeit, Tagesspiegel and Deutschlandradio, and became a freelance author in 2013. His books include »Tel Aviv – Berlin«, »100 Gramm Wodka«, »König der Hobos« and the Spiegel bestseller »Vier Räder, Küche, Bad«. Gareis has received the ITB Book Award several times.
