Frederick Kohner was born in 1905 in Teplitz-Schönau and died in 1986 in Brentwood, USA. He studied literature in Vienna and Paris, lived in Berlin, and worked as a screenwriter. After fleeing with his family via Paris and London, he emigrated to Hollywood. He became best known for the novel Gidget: My Summer in Malibu, which he wrote in 1957 within a few weeks for his daughter Kathy. The book contributed to the popularization of surfing.
