Frederic Morton was born Fritz Mandelbaum in Vienna in 1924. In 1939, he emigrated to the United States via England, where he initially worked as a baker and studied before achieving an international breakthrough as a writer. His biography of the Rothschilds was successfully adapted into a Broadway musical, and Morton was nominated several times for the National Book Award. His works include “The Rothschilds,” “Crosstown Sabbath,” “Geschichten aus zwei Welten,” “Ewigkeitsgasse,” “Ein letzter Walzer,” “Wetterleuchten,” and “Das Zauberschiff.” Morton died in 2015 while visiting Vienna.
