Franz Roh

Franz Roh (1890–1965) was a German art historian, writer, and artist. His 1925 book „Nach-Expressionismus“ introduced the term “magical realism.” During the 1920s, he also explored New Photography and experimented with paper collage. Because of his commitment to avant-garde art, he was taken into protective custody and banned from publishing during the Nazi period. After 1945, he taught at the University of Munich and founded Germany’s first art library, or artothek.
