Franz Karl Ginzkey was born in 1871 in Pola, then part of Austria and now Pula, Croatia, the son of a career officer in the Austrian navy. He also pursued a military career and worked at Vienna’s Military Geographic Institute and the War Archives until the end of the First World War. In 1957, he received the Grand Austrian State Prize for Literature jointly with Heimito von Doderer.
