Frank MacShane

Frank MacShane (1929–1999) studied at Harvard and Yale and received his doctorate from the University of Oxford in 1955. At Columbia University in New York, he founded the Graduate Writing Division. MacShane was interested in Latin American literature and translated from Spanish. As a critic, he was an early academic advocate of Raymond Chandler and his work. He wrote a widely regarded biography of Chandler and edited Chandler’s collected letters and notebooks.
