Frank Herbert (1920–1986) was an American writer born in Tacoma, Washington. After studying journalism, he worked at various times as a cameraman, radio announcer, lecturer, and oyster diver. His debut novel, *The Dragon in the Sea*, was first published as a serial in a science-fiction magazine in 1955. Herbert became internationally known in the mid-1960s with *Dune*, which received both the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award. The novel and its sequels form an extensive science-fiction saga.
