Born in 1938, Frank Baer grew up in Würzburg and studied history and philosophy in Munich. After completing a traineeship at a daily newspaper, he worked as a staff freelance contributor for several editorial departments of Bavarian Television. His first novel, The Magermilchbande, was adapted for film by Bavarian Television and translated into English in 1983. Following extensive research, Baer published the historical novel The Bridge of Alcántara in the late 1980s. It became a bestseller and attracted a particularly large readership in Spain.
