Etienne Balibar

Étienne Balibar (born 1942) is a French philosopher. He was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Paris X Nanterre and also taught at several universities worldwide. A student and close collaborator of Louis Althusser, Balibar co-authored the influential work Reading Capital with him. His work addresses the foundations of Marxist theory, historical materialism, the limits of democracy, and the concept of “equaliberty.” Balibar was a longtime member of the French Communist Party. In 2017, he received the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought.
