Ernst von Salomon

Ernst von Salomon (1902–1972) was a German writer and publicist. After receiving military training at a Prussian cadet school, he joined several Freikorps units after the First World War. As a member of the Consul organization, he was involved in the assassination of Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau and was sentenced to prison for aiding and abetting murder, though he was later pardoned. He became known with his debut novel, *The Outlaws* (*Die Geächteten*, 1930). During the Nazi era, he worked in the film industry. After the Second World War, he described his internment by the American occupying authorities in *The Questionnaire* (*Der Fragebogen*), his most successful work and a bestseller in Germany and France. He later became involved in the international peace movement.
