Erich Fried

Erich Fried (1921–1988), born in Vienna and deceased in Baden-Baden, was a German-language poet, essayist, writer, and translator. After fleeing Austria in 1938, he lived in England, where he initially worked as a laborer and later for the BBC. From 1968 onward, he worked as a freelance writer and translator. Fried became known particularly for his political poetry, love poems, and translations of Shakespeare. He also wrote the novel *Ein Soldat und ein Mädchen* (1960) and short prose. He received the Austrian State Prize in 1986 and the Georg Büchner Prize in 1987.
