Éric Rohmer (born Jean-Marie Maurice Schérer, 1920–2010) was a French film director, critic, and essayist. After studying literature, he initially worked as a teacher before devoting himself to film and theater. He made his feature-film debut in 1959 with »Le Signe du Lion«. Rohmer is regarded as a co-founder and leading theorist of the French New Wave. He made numerous films during his career, several of which received prestigious awards.
