Eric Carle

Eric Carle (1929–2021) was an American children’s author and illustrator. He was born in Syracuse, New York, and lived in Germany from 1935 to 1952, where he also studied. After returning to the United States, he initially worked as a graphic designer and illustrator, including for The New York Times. From 1968 onward, he published numerous children’s books and became best known for the picture-book classic *The Very Hungry Caterpillar*. His works were translated into many languages and received numerous awards. In 2001, Carle was awarded the German Order of Merit. Together with his wife, he founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts, which opened in 2002.
