Epiktet

Author · 15 books

Epictetus (c. 50–138 CE) was an ancient philosopher and one of the leading representatives of late Stoicism. Born enslaved in Hierapolis, Phrygia, in what is now Turkey, he was taken to Rome, where he became acquainted with Stoic philosophy and began teaching. After philosophers were expelled from Rome, he founded a school of philosophy in Nicopolis. Epictetus wrote no works himself; his teachings are known chiefly through the notes of his student Arrian, including the “Enchiridion” (Handbook of Morals). His philosophy focuses on ethical questions, inner freedom, and moral autonomy.
