Emma Goldman

Emma Goldman (1869–1940) was a Jewish-American anarchist, writer, feminist, and peace activist of Russian origin. She emigrated to the United States as a teenager and became known for her lectures, political writings, and advocacy of workers’ rights, birth control, free speech, and free love. From 1906, she edited the anarchist magazine Mother Earth together with Alexander Berkman. Her political activities led to several arrests, and she was deported from the United States in 1919. After becoming disillusioned with political repression in the Soviet Union, she lived in Europe and supported the anarchists during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Her best-known works include her autobiography Living My Life and writings on anarchism. Goldman died in Toronto in 1940.
